Our History

Generations of change-makers

We are dedicated to pioneering innovative technologies that enhance efficiency, sustainability, and performance for our customers worldwide.

  • 1979

    45 Years History

In the 1970s, the petroleum industry turned to the deep gas fields of South Texas and found the need for a new type of proppant material to commercially extract natural gas by a process called hydraulic fracturing. A telephone call to the Carborundum Company started a process that would result in the formation of a proppants division as a separate legal entity on Jan. 1st, 1979, concurrent with the start of production in New Iberia, Louisiana.

  • 1987

    45 Years History

In 1987, Bill Morris and a group of investors acquired a small proppants division, establishing it as CARBO Ceramics Inc. With Morris’s investment expertise and Orsini’s industry insight, the newly formed company focused on producing cost-effective proppants like CARBOLITE to compete with traditional sand in hydraulic fracturing. This positioned the company to grow within a competitive and evolving marketplace.

  • 2002

    Production Surveillance

In 2002, CARBO Ceramics expanded production by 25% with a new manufacturing plant in China and increased capacities at facilities in Georgia and Louisiana, bringing total annual capacity to nearly 685 million pounds. The company also broadened its global reach with new distribution centers in Australia, Singapore, and the UAE, enhancing delivery to drilling sites. That year, under new CEO Mark Pearson’s leadership, CARBO unveiled a new Core Values and Mission Statement, emphasizing the importance of each employee’s role, while launching a Research and Product Development Center to support ongoing innovation.

  • 2009

    About us

In 2009, CARBO Ceramics relocated its headquarters to Houston, enhanced cost-efficiency measures, and expanded the distribution of its lightweight ceramic proppant, CARBOHYDROPROP®, across key shale formations in the U.S. and Canada. Alongside new product developments like CARBOBOND™ and the acquisition of Falcon Technologies, CARBO advanced its technology offerings, including upgrades to FracproPT software and the expansion of StrataGen Engineering’s consulting services, all while preparing to increase manufacturing capacity by 20% to meet growing demand.

  • 2013

    About us

In 2013, CARBO Ceramics achieved record revenues and ceramic proppant sales, despite market challenges, by capitalizing on demand growth and expanding market share. The company launched innovative products like KRYPTOSPHERE, a high-strength proppant, and SCALEGUARD for scale inhibition, and advanced its Production Enhancement technology with the Design, Build, and Optimize the Frac™ platform to enhance well productivity. Additionally, CARBO increased manufacturing capacity with a new plant in Millen, Georgia, and saw record sales of Fracpro, supporting its global expansion and solidifying its leadership in ceramic proppants and fracture solutions.

  • 2022

    About us

CARBO announced the appointment of Shannon Nelson as the new CEO. He previously served as Vice President of manufacturing and distribution, overseeing all Manufacturing operations throughout CARBO. With his extensive industry experience and tenure with CARBO, Shannon leads strategic initiatives to achieve the company’s goals and success.

  • 2024

    About us

CARBO Ceramics is proud to mark its 45th anniversary as a pioneering force in the field of ceramic technology. Over the past four and a half decades, CARBO has consistently demonstrated a commitment to innovation and excellence, solidifying its position as a leader in the industry.
